Diary of the Grid: Notes on Edges

Piet Mondrian:

Piet Mondrian [detail], ca. 1920

The scale of this image is about 3-6 inches across, I forgot. I don't recall the accuracy of this photograph with respect to scale, but it is very close to those dimensions, for all practical purposes.

Diary of the Grid: Notes on the Painting Method

A grid of acrylics is painted using non-arbitrary colors. Subsequently, a complementary X is painted inside the square using oil paint. The finished painting is then digitally photographed. Using computer graphics tools, the photograph is manipulated to 'generate' a new set of color transformations across a different grid space.

Diary of the Grid: Paint Machine 2.0

— November 2, 2022

I imagine a machine that can paint 43,164 corners, right angles. 10,791 squares 16 mm across — interior dimensions. The squares are separated by a dark, negative-space, which is grid of perpendicular lines 0.795 mm in width rendered in dark violet.

The paint machine would have a lot of tubes.

Perhaps there are two machines, one is a preliminary tape machine that is taping the grid over a dark violet canvas. I imagine this would be the easy part.

Caveman Tape Machine

I am deciding whether I should paint these 16 mm squares more like typewriter keys with more rounded corners.

Painting into the vertex, and not outside of it, requires a lot of focus and determination.
